A Brief History of Baptism in the Presbyterian Church
In the Presbyterian tradition, baptism is a sacrament a visible sign of God’s invisible grace. From the earliest days of the Reformed faith, Presbyterians have baptized both children and adults, recognizing that God’s love and promises extend to all people.
Infant or Child
Child baptism reflects our belief that God’s grace is present before we can even understand it. It symbolizes a child’s inclusion in the covenant community and the commitment of parents and the congregation to nurture that child in faith.
Adult
Adult baptism is a joyful response to God’s call a personal profession of faith and a public declaration of one’s desire to follow Christ. Both forms are equally meaningful, reminding us that baptism is not about our worthiness, but about God’s unending love and faithfulness.
