Board of Deacons
About the Board of Deacons
The office of Deacon, as outlined in Scripture, is a ministry of compassion, witness, and service, modeled after the example of Jesus Christ. Deacons are responsible to the Session and are charged with caring for the welfare of the congregation, offering support to those in need, and providing a wide range of service to the church community.
The Board consists of 12 members and is led by a Moderator chosen from within the group. Deacons meet monthly following the Sunday worship service.
Deacons play a vital role in preparing the sanctuary for worship, including:
– Caring for church linens and candles
– Polishing brass items
– Preparing the baptismal font
– Serving as ushers for services and funerals
– Preparing and serving communion (alternating months with the Session)
Deacons also lead key congregational events, such as:
– Hosting the Palm Sunday Breakfast
– Organizing the June church picnic
– “Greening” the church for the Advent season
In addition, Deacons help raise funds for the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund, which supports individuals and families in times of financial need.
